Closed System Treatment: Heating and Chilled Water Circuits

Closed systems low temperature hot water (LTHW) heating and chilled water (CHW) circuits recirculate the same water, but they still corrode and foul internally: oxygen and dissolved solids drive corrosion, hardness causes scale, and microbial growth can form deposits, all of which reduce heat transfer, block components and damage plant. Treatment means dosing a suitable corrosion inhibitor (and biocide where needed), keeping the system clean and correctly filled, and monitoring the water chemistry inhibitor level, appearance, microbial activity to recognised guidance such as the relevant BSRIA guidance. Well-treated closed systems run efficiently and last; neglected ones lose efficiency and fail early.

Why Closed Systems Still Foul

A closed system recirculates the same water, so people assume it stays clean. But even a well-sealed system takes in some oxygen, is filled with water that carries dissolved solids and hardness, and can develop microbial growth. Oxygen and dissolved solids drive internal corrosion; hardness precipitates as scale on hot surfaces; and biological growth forms sludge and biofilm. The products of all three circulate and settle, coating heat exchangers, blocking small passages and valves, and accelerating the corrosion of the plant itself.

The system water needs monitoring the inhibitor concentration, the water's appearance and dissolved iron, and microbial activity to confirm the treatment is holding and to catch problems early.
