Nitrates are not normally naturally occurring in water supplies, it is usually introduced by farming fertilisers. Nitrates in potable or process water is generally undesirable, it can cause a range of problems from blue baby syndrome (under 6 months) to contamination of poultry if used in the birds feedwater. The EU maximum limit is 50mg/l with an advisory limit of 25mg/l.
Removal of Nitrates is completed by an ion exchange process similar to water softeners. The supply water must be analysed and the nitrate concentrations determined. A system can then be accurately sized and media regeneration times calculated.
